THE GYPSY PHARMACIST
* 21 February 1952 in Thailand
Krisana is a Professor and Pharmacist from Thailand and has worked tirelessly to make medicines affordable to even the poorest in the world.
Her effort to cut the cost of treatment for HIV, Malaria and other diseases have saved and improved countless lifes.
Sje says about her work: “I am sensitive to the suffering of people. In Thailand in those days in 1992 there were 150 000 HIV patients and only rich people can get access to treatment. So what about the rest? If you are poor you die. It’s not fair, it’s a human right.”
At that time Patients had to take three pills in the morning and three in the evening, which was expensive. So Krisana created a “3 in 1 cocktail” and developed the cheapest therapy in the world.
In 2002 she left Thailand and worked in Afrika for 12 years. She started manufacturing ARV and start from building the factory, supervising the constructions of the factory and teaching local people to manufacture ARV drugs.
“That’s why African people call me the Gypsy pharmacist because I don’t have a home. I tra- vel all the time…everywhere is my home. I will not give up, I never give up.”
